SSH<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the most commonly attacked services as it provides easy access to full control of a\u00a0dedicated server<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. Changing the default SSH port will help prevent an attacker from launching brute force attacks to the default port.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong>\u00a0Login as the\u00a0server as root<\/strong>\u00a0(or gain root access by executing\u00a0‘sudo su’<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong>\u00a0Check to see the status of the firewall by executing\u00a0‘ufw status’<\/strong>
\nIf the firewall is active then we need to add a rule to allow connections for our new SSH port.
\nThis can be done by executing\u00a0‘ufw allow newportnumberhere\/tcp’<\/strong><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong>\u00a0Execute\u00a0‘nano \/etc\/ssh\/sshd_config’<\/strong>\u00a0and look for the line that contains\u00a0‘Port 22’<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.<\/strong>\u00a0Change the number\u00a0’22’<\/strong>\u00a0to any unused port you’d like<\/p>\n

Save and exit by holding down\u00a0‘ctrl’<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0‘x’<\/strong><\/p>\n

5.<\/strong>\u00a0Restart the SSH service by executing\u00a0‘restart ssh’<\/strong>\u00a0within the command line<\/p>\n

For Debian, execute\u00a0‘service ssh restart’<\/strong><\/p>\n

6.<\/strong>\u00a0If you can still access the command line, type\u00a0‘ss -tnlp | grep ssh’<\/strong>\u00a0to verify SSH is listening on the new port. (optional)<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong>\u00a0Start a new\u00a0SSH session<\/strong>\u00a0on the new port.<\/p>\n
