To change the community string:<\/p>\n\n- Open\u00a0Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services<\/strong><\/li>\n
- Find\u00a0‘SNMP Service’<\/strong>, right click it, and choose Properties<\/li>\n
- On the Security tab, click the\u00a0‘Add’<\/strong>\u00a0button near\u00a0‘Accepted community names’<\/strong><\/li>\n
- Enter a secure password for this (do not reuse any existing password)<\/li>\n
- Make sure to remove any insecure passwords (default values such as\u00a0‘public’ or ‘private’<\/strong>\u00a0are commonly abused)<\/li>\n
- Click\u00a0OK<\/strong><\/li>\n
- Restart the SNMP service<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
On Linux machines<\/strong>, SNMP is commonly run through the net-snmp library:<\/p>\n\n- Open your\u00a0snmpd.conf<\/strong>\u00a0file\u00a0(usually \/etc\/snmp\/snmpd.conf)<\/strong><\/li>\n
- Find the line that looks like:\u00a0‘com2sec notConfigUser default public’<\/strong>\u00a0(the line will begin with com2sec and end with a password. In this example, the password is\u00a0‘public’<\/strong>)<\/li>\n
- Change the\u00a0‘public’<\/strong>\u00a0at the end of the line to a more secure password<\/li>\n
